Registration of the patient with RS virus infection

Through the Public Health Agency of Sweden, the National Board of Health and Welfare has requested that SIR (SIRI) record data on RS patients according to the routine that exists today for influenza and COVID-19. After examination, the Public Health Agency of Sweden has also requested that this be done.

The reason for this is that the authorities have noticed that RS patients have increased, which means increased pressure on inpatient beds and, by extension, also an impact on intensive care. There is a need for a comprehensive overview of the occupancy in intensive care. The request for follow-up also for RS virus follows the basic agreement between SIR and the Public Health Agency of Sweden (formerly the Swedish Centre for Disease Control) that there have been many years that new agents can be added as they are deemed essential for epidemiological surveillance of serious infection.

The desire for follow-up is also supported in Sweden's network of Health Care Directors and the network for ICU coordination during the pandemic (which has also been tasked with following the overall situation of COVID-19, RS virus and influenza).

SIR has, in collaboration with the Public Health Agency of Sweden, assessed that registration is possible with a minor revision of the current web-based reporting tool. This revision has now been completed and reporting of RS virus will also open on 2021-11-10 at 07:30. The reports on the Covid-19, influenza and RS virus output portal will also be synchronized as soon as possible and become more consistent.

It is also hoped that patients enrolled in ICU with RS virus will also be registered retroactively from 2021-08-01. See diagnostic codes:

  • J12.1 Pneumonia Caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus [RSV]
  • J20.5 Acute bronchitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus
  • J21.0 Acute bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus
  • B97.4 Respiratory syncytial virus as cause of diseases classified in other chapters

SIR is now urgently investigating the possibility of offering support in such retroactive reporting. Further information on this will be provided shortly.

The new SIRI reporting guideline can be found here.
On the same page there is also a PDF form for printing if you need a physical basis to collect the data on.
